Colombia Joins Global Sustainable Tourism Council, Reinforcing its Commitment to Environmental Conservation

Colombia’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Colombia has become a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), solidifying its commitment to responsible tourism practices. Boasting a diverse array of ecosystems, from sandy beaches to towering Andean peaks, Colombia is home to an abundant natural and cultural heritage.

Recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, Colombia harbors almost 10% of Earth’s biodiversity, leading globally in bird and orchid diversity. This membership aligns with Colombia’s ongoing environmental initiatives, which include designating 30% of its land as protected areas and aiming for net zero deforestation by 2030.

Colombia’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental preservation. The country has implemented comprehensive strategies that promote social justice and economic growth. These initiatives include a Responsible Investment Task Force, a Green Taxonomy, and Circular Economy Strategies, which aim to encourage sustainable investment practices, guide economic activities towards sustainability goals, and promote the reuse of waste within business models.

Sustainability in Action

Colombia’s commitment to sustainability is evident in various initiatives, such as enacting laws to phase out single-use plastics and participating in the Global Plastic Initiative. Additionally, the country has implemented a plan for plastic reduction and substitution.

Sustainable Tourism Policy

Colombia has developed a Sustainable Tourism Policy that seeks to align tourism development with the conservation of natural resources. The policy aims to promote responsible tourism practices while preserving the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Joining the GSTC

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Germán Umaña, highlighted the significance of joining the GSTC and sharing experiences with member countries. He emphasized Colombia’s leadership role in developing its Sustainable Tourism Policy and implementing good practices.
