Syracuse football has added another piece to its offensive line with the commitment of transfer offensive tackle Savion Washington from Colorado.
Washington, a 6-foot-8, 320-pound tackle, announced his decision to join the Orange on Tuesday night via Instagram. He had previously received offers from Syracuse, Baylor, Rutgers, and Texas A&M after entering the transfer portal on April 15.
Washington played in 10 games for Colorado last season after transferring from Kent State, where he played for three years. According to Pro Football Focus, he had the third-best overall offensive grade (65.4%) among the Buffs’ offensive linemen, as well as the third-best run blocking grade (64.5%) and the fifth-best pass blocking grade (69.1%).
The Colorado offensive line struggled last season, prompting coach Deion Sanders to announce plans to replace them. The team allowed the second-most sacks in the country, with PFF attributing four of those sacks to Washington.
Despite returning most of last year’s depth chart, Syracuse’s offensive line has been an open competition throughout the spring under new position coach Dale Williams. While a somewhat solidified first-team emerged by the spring game, the tackle spots remain up for grabs.
This spring, Enrique Cruz, Josh Miller, and Da’Metrius Weatherspoon competed for the two tackle spots. With Washington’s arrival, as well as the additions of Grambling State transfer Codie Hornsby and returning player David Wohlabaugh (who missed spring with an injury), the competition is expected to intensify in the fall.
Washington is Syracuse’s second transfer addition during the second transfer window, which closes on April 30. Notre Dame cornerback Clarence Lewis was the first.
