In the wake of a disruptive month-long anti-Israel encampment on campus, Senator Marco Rubio has demanded a refund for students at Columbia University who were deprived of the educational services they paid for with their tuition. The encampment, which began in mid-April and persisted until the end of the month, was characterized by antisemitic language and sentiments, the occupation of a campus building, and the display of pro-Hamas signs and slogans. Jewish students, in particular, faced threats and were advised to leave campus for their safety. Columbia University’s failure to promptly address the situation prompted Senator Rubio to demand a tuition refund for affected students, emphasizing that they were entitled to the quality education they had paid for. He highlighted the targeting of Jewish students and the threats to everyone on campus. Despite the escalating tensions, Columbia University did not seek assistance from the NYPD until nearly two weeks after the encampment began, which ultimately led to delays and changes in academic activities. The university canceled the undergraduate commencement ceremony and switched final exams to online mode due to safety concerns. Senator Rubio holds the university accountable for its inadequate response to the unlawful occupation, resulting in the loss of three weeks of in-person classes for many students. He believes that a refund would, to some extent, compensate for the disruption caused by the university’s mishandling of the encampment. Columbia University did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment prior to publication.
