In a letter sent on Monday, ten Republican members of Congress from New York demanded the resignation of Columbia University’s president, citing ‘anarchy’ on campus. The request came as tensions escalated amidst pro-Palestinian protests that have established a makeshift tent city on campus. Last week, the NYPD arrested over 100 individuals at the university’s request.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul visited the campus on Monday, expressing concern over the ‘person-to-person’ level of protest. She emphasized the need for dialogue and understanding of diverse perspectives.
The NYPD reported no physical harm but acknowledged harassment reports from Jewish students, including the confiscation of flags and hate speech. The Ivy League university shifted to virtual classes on Monday.
Protests also emerged at NYU and Yale on Monday, resulting in 50 arrests. Harvard has closed its Harvard Yard this week and prohibited tents.
Robert Kraft, an alumnus and major donor to Columbia, has halted donations until corrective actions are implemented.
