The Congress party has alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not acted on its complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his ‘redistribution of wealth’ remarks, and has announced its intention to pursue legal remedies. Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate stated that the party is considering legal options as the ECI has failed to respond to their complaint. This comes after the Congress filed a complaint with the ECI seeking action against Mr. Modi for his remarks at a poll rally in Rajasthan on April 22. The party has accused the prime minister of making hate speeches and targeting a particular religious community. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi made hate speeches in Rajasthan. My colleagues met the EC on Monday and we have pressed charges against him. As they are not acting upon our complaint, we are looking at legal remedies,” Ms. Shrinate told PTI. The Congress has expressed concern over the integrity of the electoral process, stating that the ECI needs to have the complete faith of the people and should work to restore that trust if it is shaken. “We hope that it will be a free and fair election. But we see little evidence of that,” Shrinate said, adding that the less said about the EC’s actions against the BJP, the better. The prime minister’s remarks sparked a political controversy, with the Congress claiming that they were “divisive” and “malicious.” The BJP has defended Mr. Modi, asserting that his comments were misconstrued and that he did not intend to target any particular community. The ECI is yet to comment on the Congress’ complaint.
