Congress Contests Less in Strategy to Unite Opposition, Defeat BJP

In a move to consolidate the opposition and challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party has opted to contest a reduced number of seats. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has explained that this strategy aims to unite the INDIA bloc of opposition parties and increase their collective strength.

Kharge emphasized that the party’s decision to contest fewer seats does not stem from a lack of confidence but rather from a deliberate compromise. This move is designed to ensure the victory of a united opposition while granting space to other parties with regional strengths. The Congress has established a committee to forge coalitions in each state after extensive consultations with like-minded parties throughout the country.

In response to questions about which seat Rahul Gandhi should relinquish if he wins both Wayanad and Rae Bareli, Kharge stated that the decision is ultimately Gandhi’s personal choice. Regarding potential conflicts between alliance partners in states like Kerala, Bengal, and Punjab, Kharge asserted that there is no disunity in the fight against the central government. He clarified that in some states, both parties in the INDIA bloc are key players, and contesting these seats separately prevents the BJP from benefiting.

Kharge emphasized that every state has a unique alliance arrangement, but the overarching goal remains to combat the BJP and its ideology. He expressed confidence that the INDIA alliance has the necessary numbers to prevent the BJP from retaining power and highlighted the divergent assessments of opposition leaders on the NDA’s performance.

When asked about Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav’s call to abolish the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Kharge stated that a future Congress government would review all laws. He condemned the BJP’s alleged misuse of investigative agencies and questioned the timing of arrests of opposition leaders ahead of the elections.

Kharge justified Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s decision not to contest the elections, explaining that it was a decision made in consultation with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. He praised Priyanka Gandhi’s role as a star campaigner alongside Rahul Gandhi, emphasizing their popularity and ability to mobilize voters.

The Congress president also defended the decision of several party stalwarts to abstain from contesting, citing their contributions to assembly elections and the party’s strategy to empower emerging leaders. He highlighted the importance of senior leaders in guiding the party’s national election campaign.

Kharge concluded his remarks by criticizing the BJP for its alleged suppression of democracy and undermining of the Constitution. He emphasized the significance of the upcoming election for all citizens, young and old, and urged voters to be vigilant against the BJP’s tactics.
