Congress Attacks Modi over BJP Candidate’s Sexual Harassment Charges
The Indian National Congress has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for giving a Lok Sabha ticket to the son of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing sexual harassment allegations.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posed a series of questions to the Prime Minister ahead of his rallies in Uttar Pradesh, questioning the status of several infrastructure projects and the safety of women under the BJP’s rule.
Unfinished Jaunpur Medical College and Neglect of Gomti River
Ramesh criticized the BJP for the incomplete Jaunpur Medical College, laying the blame on the party’s lack of prioritization. Despite the foundation stone being laid in 2015, the college remains largely incomplete, with only limited functionality. He also raised concerns about the state of the Gomti River, alleging that the BJP government has violated environmental regulations and ignored court orders to preserve the river’s health.
BJP’s Ticket to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s Son
Expressing outrage over the BJP’s decision to field Karan Bhushan Singh, the son of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Ramesh questioned the party’s commitment to protecting women. The Prime Minister’s silence on the allegations against Singh was also criticized.
Questions Raised on Women’s Safety
Ramesh emphatically stated that women’s safety was paramount and raised concerns about their well-being in India under Modi’s leadership. He highlighted the hypocrisy of the BJP’s ‘Nari Shakti’ slogan, which promotes women’s empowerment, while sheltering alleged perpetrators of sexual violence.
The Congress’s attack on the BJP is expected to intensify as the election campaign progresses, with the party aiming to highlight the ruling party’s shortcomings and present itself as a credible alternative.
