Conservative Group Demands Resignation of Top MA Transportation Official
A conservative activist group, the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, is calling for the resignation of Transportation Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt for her proposal to implement tolls for out-of-state drivers entering Massachusetts.
Tibbits-Nutt’s proposal, made during a keynote speech on April 10th, sparked a wave of criticism. The group’s spokesperson, Paul D. Craney, denounced the plan, stating that it weaponizes taxation against individuals and undermines public trust in government.
The proposal has also drawn criticism from Democratic Governor Maura Healey, who distanced herself from Tibbits-Nutt’s remarks, emphasizing that they do not represent the administration’s views.
The Massachusetts Republican Party has labeled the proposal as ‘bad policy’ and disrespectful to state residents. They argue that it will exacerbate the affordability crisis and contribute to the exodus of individuals from the state.
In her speech, Tibbits-Nutt acknowledged the state’s financial challenges and questioned how to ensure equitable infrastructure funding. She discussed tolling as a potential solution, specifically at state borders.
New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu expressed his opposition to the plan, suggesting that it would further incentivize residents to relocate to New Hampshire.
The Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance has launched a campaign urging the public to contact elected officials in support of Tibbits-Nutt’s resignation.
