Constellations Explores Parallel Universes and the Choices We Make

Kane County Repertory opens its 2024-25 season with the two-person play “Constellations” by Nick Payne, which explores the intriguing concept of parallel universes. The play delves into the idea that multiple versions of us exist simultaneously in alternate realities, with our choices shaping the course of our lives in each universe.

Directed by Kane County Repertory’s new artistic director, Bethany Mangum-Oles, “Constellations” follows Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a physicist, as they navigate the intricacies of their romantic relationship. Through a series of fragmented scenes, the play chronicles their journey across multiple iterations of their lives, from their first encounter to a pivotal moment that profoundly impacts their relationship.

The structure of the play is particularly captivating, as it presents the same scene with slight variations, allowing the audience to explore the different paths that could have been taken and the impact of seemingly insignificant choices. “Constellations” challenges our notions of free will and destiny, prompting us to reflect on the complexities of our own lives.

Mangum-Oles describes the play as “the greatest love story ever told,” but emphasizes that it transcends the boundaries of a traditional love story. She believes the play will resonate with audiences and spark deep introspection, particularly after they become accustomed to its unique style and structure.

“Constellations” will be performed at the Hunt House Creative Arts Center in St. Charles from April 25-27 and May 2-4 at 7:30 p.m. and on April 28 and May 5 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at $20-$35.
