Construction Headaches in Florida Towns

Construction projects in Florida have wreaked havoc on traffic, particularly in the growing town of Palmetto. A project on US 41 has turned the highway into a parking lot, leaving drivers fuming. Resident Sherry Batye expressed her frustration over a two-hour commute that normally takes just four miles. “The bridges are terrible, and you’ve got to get over them,” she lamented.

The construction has also had a negative impact on businesses along the road. Restaurant owner Ismail Ilhan reported a significant loss in revenue, as customers were deterred by the prospect of long delays. “Nobody wanted to come out because it’s going to take them hours to get here and hours to go back,” he said.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the traffic backups were caused by the convergence of multiple construction projects. However, drivers across the state have expressed concerns about traffic delays due to other roadway projects. Gridlock on Rickenbacker Causeway was caused by weathered concrete restoration, leaving drivers stuck in hours-long traffic. Gabrielle Marin, another affected driver, described the situation as particularly challenging for those with children or medical conditions.

In response to the outcry, FDOT released a statement acknowledging the community’s concerns and promising prompt action. Despite the completion of the projects in April, drivers continue to endure traffic disruptions, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by construction in Florida’s growing communities.
