A tragic accident at the Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilizers factory on Friday resulted in the death of a contract worker and injuries to two others. The deceased, identified as A Hariharan, 23, of the Manjaneerkayal area in Tuticorin district, was working on fixing a leaky pipeline at the ammonia manufacturing plant within the factory alongside S Dhanraj, 37, and C Marimuthu, 24.
According to police sources, the accident occurred while the workers attempted to close the leaky pipeline. The force of the ammonia concentrate stream struck Hariharan directly, causing severe burns and injuries that led to his immediate demise. Dhanraj and Marimuthu were also injured, suffering burn injuries on their legs and inhaling ammonia gas, leading to suffocation.
Fellow workers swiftly rescued the injured individuals, rushing them to a private hospital in Tuticorin. The body of Hariharan was recovered by Muthiahpuram police and sent to Tuticorin Medical College Hospital for a postmortem. Muthiahpuram police have registered a case to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
