Controversial Democrat Running for Senate in Maryland: Five Wackiest Moments

Former Republican Governor Larry Hogan, who is seeking a Democratic-held Senate seat in Maryland, has commented on the upcoming primary election on Tuesday.

The leading Democratic candidate in one of this year’s most closely watched Senate races, Rep. David Trone, has a history of making controversial statements, both as a candidate and member of Congress, as well as during his time in the private sector.

Here are five of Trone’s most notable controversial moments:

1. Using a racial slur during a House hearing

Trone used a derogatory term for Black people during a House Budget Committee hearing about tax policy. Several Black lawmakers have since declined to endorse him following this incident.

2. Screaming at a reporter when pressed on controversial statements

Trone became agitated when a reporter asked him about controversial comments he made about police on social media. He accused the reporter of cherry-picking lines out of his post and of advocating for his Republican rival, Larry Hogan.

3. Allegedly threatening to ‘execute’ a delivery worker

A police report revealed that Trone allegedly threatened to harm a delivery worker at a Total Wine store in Arizona. Eyewitnesses confirmed that Trone threatened the man, but it’s unclear if charges were filed.

4. Citing family’s alcoholism, lack of indoor plumbing to relate to Black voters

Trone stated that he can relate to Black voters due to his family’s struggles with alcoholism and his experience growing up without indoor plumbing.

5. Berating campaign staff over scheduling issue

Trone criticized members of his campaign staff in an email over a scheduling issue. He accused them of being “insubordinate” and of disregarding his instructions.

Despite these controversies, Trone remains a frontrunner in the Democratic primary. The outcome of the election will be closely watched, as it could have implications for the balance of power in the Senate.
