Corsair Ditches 80 PLUS for More Detailed Cybenetics Certification on Power Supplies

Corsair, a leading manufacturer of PC components, is moving away from the familiar 80 PLUS certification for its power supplies. The company is switching to the Cybenetics certification, which provides a more comprehensive and detailed assessment of power supply performance.

The 80 PLUS label has been a long-standing industry standard for power supply efficiency, indicating a minimum efficiency of 80% at various load levels. However, Corsair believes that modern power supplies require a more nuanced evaluation than simply efficiency. Cybenetics offers a more detailed testing methodology, producing thousands of data points across different load levels, providing a more accurate reflection of real-world usage.

While Cybenetics retains a similar tiered rating system for efficiency, with levels like Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, and Diamond, it also introduces a separate rating for noise levels. This noise rating uses a school-like grading system, from A++ to F, to indicate the expected noise levels from the power supply’s cooling system during operation.

Corsair has released a chart outlining its 2024 power supply lineup with both the new Cybenetics Efficiency and Noise certifications, as well as the existing 80 PLUS Efficiency ratings. The company has confirmed that its future power supply products will exclusively feature the Cybenetics certifications. This change could potentially influence other PSU manufacturers to follow suit and adopt the Cybenetics certification for a more comprehensive and accurate representation of power supply performance.
