County Laois and its stunning Castle Durrow are set to take center stage in a new British television series, ‘Country House Auction’. The four-part series, debuting on More4 on August 13th, delves into the captivating world of fine antiques and their journey from restoration to appraisal and ultimately, auction.
The series, supported by Tourism Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen, centers around the annual Country House Auction, organized by the esteemed Sheppard’s Irish Auction House. Last year’s auction, held within the majestic 18th-century Castle Durrow, saw the castle’s owners, Tessa and Robin Leidig, opening their 300-year-old home to a vibrant community of antique enthusiasts, buyers, sellers, and historical homeowners, all eager to witness the bidding on rare and treasured items.
Beyond the captivating world of auctions, ‘Country House Auction’ also showcases the breathtaking landscapes of County Laois. Viewers will be treated to the grandeur of Castle Durrow and Sheppard’s Auction House alongside other captivating locations in the surrounding area, including Swifte’s Heath and Burnchurch House in County Kilkenny, Limerick Museum, and Gloster House in County Offaly.
Tourism Ireland’s Head of Great Britain, Julie Wakley, expressed her excitement about the series, stating, “Tourism Ireland was delighted to support the production of this new four-part TV series ‘Country House Auction’. With a large audience across Britain set to watch the series on More4, it’s a great way to shine a spotlight on Castle Durrow and Co Laois, highlighting our rich heritage and history. “Publicity and broadcasts like this are a key element of Tourism Ireland’s programme of activity, to inspire travellers in Britain to put the island of Ireland on their holiday wish-list.”
With its focus on antique auctions, historical locations, and the captivating beauty of Ireland’s countryside, ‘Country House Auction’ promises to be an engaging and informative series that will appeal to viewers interested in history, culture, and travel.
