Penny Djordjevic, 49, and her husband Pete decided to trade their traditional lives for a nomadic adventure, living on a school bus and traveling across Australia. The couple, who were tired of the daily grind, sold all their possessions and embarked on a journey eight years ago. They initially lived on a smaller bus named Billie before upgrading to their current home – a 12-meter school bus purchased for $10,500 (around £5,250) from Facebook Marketplace.
They spent around 700 renovating the bus, using recycled and upcycled materials. The walls are lined with plywood from shipping containers, and they crafted furniture from second-hand fence panelling. Penny acknowledges that life on a school bus comes with certain drawbacks, including limited storage space and the lack of features found in a regular house. She misses having a normal-sized fridge and a freezer, as well as a big TV for movie nights. However, the most challenging aspect is the toilet situation, especially during the cold Australian winters.
Despite these challenges, Penny wouldn’t trade her life for anything. The couple enjoys the freedom to travel whenever they want, without the burdens of costly home repairs, gardening, or troublesome neighbours. They also own a food van, which they take to local markets and festivals, and they support themselves by doing farm work. Their future plans include painting a mural on the outside of the bus and setting up an awning for shade.
Penny and Pete are passionate about their nomadic lifestyle. They believe bus life is fantastic, offering a cozy, easy-to-maintain, and mobile living space. Their story is a testament to the fact that a life less ordinary is within reach for those who are willing to embrace change and adventure.
