Courteney Cox recently opened up about her romantic journey with Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid, including the challenges they faced in their relationship. In a candid interview on Minnie Driver’s podcast, Minnie Questions, Cox revealed that their months-long separation in 2015 stemmed from McDaid abruptly breaking up with her during a couples therapy session.
Cox recalled the unexpected turn of events, saying, “We went to this therapist to talk about our boundaries, what we could and couldn’t accept about each other. Instead, he just broke up—within in the first minute. And I was like, ‘What?’ We were engaged and I was so shocked. I was in so much pain. I also don’t like surprises.”
Despite the initial heartbreak, Cox acknowledged the positive impact the temporary split ultimately had on her personal growth. “I did the most work on myself, by far,” she said. “I learned how to reclaim my voice, my boundaries.” Looking back, Cox expressed her gratitude for the brief separation, stating, “When we got back together, it was a different relationship. But also because it really taught me how I operated in the world. What were the things from my childhood that I needed, like, whether it was to be adored by men, things I didn’t know how to let go to be in a relationship. To not take things personally. My boundaries.”
Cox and McDaid have since rekindled their romance and have been dating for over a decade. The actress shares a daughter, Coco, with her ex-husband David Arquette. Despite choosing not to remarry, Cox and McDaid have built a strong and enduring relationship.
In a previous interview on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Cox reflected on her and McDaid’s reconciliation and how it strengthened their bond. “We were engaged to be married, but now we’re just together,” she shared. “We broke off our engagement and he moved to England. Then we got back together, and it’s actually better than it was before.”
The couple celebrated their 10-year anniversary last September with a montage of special moments over the years, including a cameo from Ed Sheeran, who introduced them in 2013. Cox and McDaid have made several public appearances together, showcasing their love and support for one another.
