Cowboys-Prescott Contract Talks: Insiders Downplay Urgency

Within the NFL community, there has been much speculation regarding the Dallas Cowboys’ lack of contract extension offers to quarterback Dak Prescott, whose current deal concludes after the upcoming season. However, insiders maintain that the situation is less pressing than it may seem.

Prescott’s contract status has generated attention given his impending free agency in 2025 and the Cowboys’ other significant financial commitments. Star receiver CeeDee Lamb is eligible for an extension this year, while edge rusher Micah Parsons is in line for one next year.

Despite the optics of Prescott’s contract situation, both he and team owner Jerry Jones have indicated that it is not a major concern. Prescott stated, ‘I’ve talked to Jerry, and so I understand where we are obviously. Jerry mentioned the same. There’s not any gray area in that sense. We had a great conversation that put us aligned in where we are in this moment, and we’ll address moving forward as that comes about.’

Prescott emphasized that he is not worried about his future with the Cowboys. ‘I’m not going to say I fear being here or not. I don’t fear either situation. Right now, it’s with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s where I want to be and where I am. After the season, we’ll see where we’re at and if the future holds that. If not, we’ll go from there.’

Prescott’s recent performance has been impressive. In 2023, he achieved career highs with 4,516 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, a 105.9 passer rating, and only nine interceptions. While he is projected to command a salary of over $50 million per year on his next contract, Prescott has expressed that resetting the QB market is not his main focus. ‘I’m not trying to be the highest paid, necessarily,’ Prescott said. ‘I’ll wait until negotiations begin. I obviously want to put this team in the best situation. I’m focused on here, right now where I am.’
