The Cowboys’ offseason spending spree has been relatively quiet compared to other contenders. Despite a disappointing postseason exit in January, the team has surprised many by keeping their 2023 roster largely intact. Owner Jerry Jones remains steadfast in his commitment to this group, believing they can end the franchise’s long-standing championship drought.
However, concerns are growing after Jones declined to directly answer questions about contract extensions for Prescott and Lamb. Prescott is entering the final year of his contract and is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season. Jones expressed his desire to keep the 30-year-old quarterback but noted that Prescott’s representatives need to make concessions before a deal can be reached.
Lamb is also entering the final year of his rookie deal after a breakout season in 2023. The star wide receiver racked up 135 catches for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jones hinted at Lamb’s future the day before the Cowboys announced a four-year, $56 million extension for Michael Gallup, a star receiver drafted one season after Lamb.
In addition to Lamb and Prescott’s looming contract talks, the Cowboys will also need to address the future of their defensive anchor, Micah Parsons. The team picked up the fifth-year option on the pass rusher’s contract on Wednesday, meaning he will hit free agency after the 2025 season. Jones has limited financial flexibility even with the recent spending spree. The Cowboys face several crucial decisions as the 2024 season approaches, and the franchise appears content to let the year play out before determining their future direction.
