Despite a formidable 210 runs at their home ground, M. Chidambaram Stadium, on April 23rd, against Lucknow Super Giants led by KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings succumbed to a six-wicket defeat. Batting first, CSK batters, particularly Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube, sustained the momentum, scoring an unbeaten 108 and 66 runs respectively. However, LSG’s Marcus Stoinis single-handedly snatched victory from CSK’s grasp, scoring an unbeaten 124 runs in just 63 deliveries. Nicolas Pooran also contributed with a crucial 34 runs.
Post-match, CSK head coach Stephan Fleming addressed the press, acknowledging areas of discomfort and the need to find the right combination of players for the tournament’s latter stages. He mentioned that while injuries and unsettledness have been factors, the focus remains on getting players in key areas into form. Fleming praised both CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and LSG all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for their centuries. He also lauded the reception legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni received on the crease, highlighting his enduring popularity.
Commenting on all-rounder Shivam Dube, Fleming recognized his importance as a bowler and commended his hard work in improving both his bowling and batting. He acknowledged Dube’s consistent performance this season and his ability to provide the team with some magic. Dube currently ranks sixth in run-getting in the IPL 2024, with 311 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 51.83 and a strike rate of 169.94.
Following the match, CSK dropped to fifth place with four wins and four losses, while LSG remained in fourth place with five wins and three losses.
