Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have expressed their opinions on the controversial dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja in their recent match, making him only the third player in IPL history to be dismissed for obstructing the field.
The incident occurred when Jadeja attempted to run back to the crease after opting for a second run. However, he changed his direction and came directly in the path of a throw from Sanju Samson, resulting in an obstruction.
CSK batting coach Michael Hussey stated that the decision could have gone either way. He acknowledged that Jadeja did attempt to change his angle while running back, but also noted that he had not initially changed his line.
RR counterpart Kumar Sangakkara, on the other hand, was more certain in his belief that Jadeja’s dismissal was justified. He pointed out that the law states that if a batter changes their direction and obstructs a throw, they are out.
Sangakkara also highlighted that Jadeja’s deviation from his original trajectory meant that he had potentially prevented a run-out. He emphasized that even if it is unclear whether Samson’s hit would have hit the stumps, the batter’s actions still constituted obstruction.
The rare dismissal has sparked a debate regarding the interpretation of the obstruction rule. CSK remains hopeful of securing a playoff spot, while RR will look to maintain their momentum in upcoming matches.
