Westfield High School baseball coach Mike Kennedy had seen enough of losing. After dropping two straight games, the Bombers found their solution in senior pitcher Colin Cusack.
Cusack was masterful on the mound Tuesday, scattering five hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings. The Bombers played some small ball, manufacturing runs to defeat rival Pittsfield 5-2 at Bullens Field.
The win snapped Westfield’s first losing streak of the season and improved their record to 7-3. Pittsfield fell to 3-4 with the loss.
Cusack, who improved to 2-0 on the season, was in control from the start. He threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of the 28 batters he faced and retired the side in order in the first and second innings.
The Bombers gave Cusack some early run support, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Joe Harrington singled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by senior first baseman Jake Crevier. Crevier scored on a groundout by junior designated hitter James Howard.
Westfield added two more runs in the third inning. Senior catcher Matt Correia singled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by sophomore second baseman Ryan Peltier. Peltier scored on a single by senior left fielder Henry Godin.
Pittsfield got on the board in the fourth inning. Senior shortstop Noah Brazie singled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by junior first baseman Luke Donati. Donati scored on a single by junior designated hitter Sean Harte.
The Generals threatened to score more runs in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out. But Cusack got out of the jam by inducing a groundout and a strikeout.
The Bombers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Crevier singled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by Godin.
Cusack retired Pittsfield in order in the seventh inning to secure the victory.
