The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) has received a remarkable gift – the largest individual donation in its history. The $3.8 million estate gift from the late James H. Hower will be dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the iconic Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail within the park.
This significant donation underscores the importance of the Towpath Trail as a cherished destination for visitors and a vital part of the park’s natural and historical landscape. Deb Yandala, president and CEO of the Conservancy, expressed deep gratitude for Hower’s generosity, highlighting his long-standing support of both the Conservancy and CVNP. Hower, a passionate advocate for the park, was instrumental in the creation of the Boston Mill Visitor Center.
Lisa Petit, superintendent of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, echoed Yandala’s sentiments, emphasizing that this gift reflects Hower’s profound love for the park and its trails. This generous contribution will ensure the Towpath Trail’s continued accessibility and enjoyment by millions of visitors for years to come.
To facilitate ongoing maintenance and improvement projects, the Conservancy has established the CVNP Towpath Trail Fund. This dedicated fund will allow the park to request support as needed. Individuals interested in contributing to the preservation of this vital trail can donate through the Conservancy’s website: www.forcvnp.org/donate.
