A global quarterly analysis has revealed that data breaches have nearly doubled in Q3 2024 compared to the previous quarter, with a staggering increase in leaked accounts.
Surfshark’s data breach monitoring tool indicates a significant jump from 215 million leaked accounts in Q2 2024 to a shocking 423 million in Q3 2024. This alarming trend highlights the increasing vulnerability of personal information online and the relentless efforts of cybercriminals to exploit weaknesses in digital security.
Emilija Kucinskaite, Senior Researcher at Surfshark, underscores the severity of the situation, stating that leaked account data remains a “significant issue.” Looking at the bigger picture, over the past 20 years, a staggering 68 billion data points have been exposed, with 18 billion of those being email addresses. On average, each leaked email address is accompanied by three additional data points, such as passwords or phone numbers.
This wealth of sensitive data is a goldmine for cybercriminals, who use it to orchestrate scams, commit fraud, impersonate individuals, and launch other malicious activities.
