The Mediterranean Sea, a global hotspot for cruise tourism, is facing the challenge of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. As tourist numbers are projected to surge from 5.5 million to 7-8 million passengers by 2028, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) has sounded the alarm, warning of potential negative impacts on the region’s delicate ecosystem and local communities.
Recognizing the importance of tourism as a vital economic driver for the Mediterranean, the CMMI has developed a comprehensive action plan as part of the EU-funded ECO-CRUISING FU_TOUR Project. This initiative aims to promote sustainable cruise tourism in the Western Mediterranean by mitigating the risks associated with unchecked growth.
The CMMI’s Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) reveals that the influx of tourists poses significant challenges for smaller urban areas, particularly those receiving multiple cruise ships simultaneously. The EIA highlights the potential for environmental degradation, strain on infrastructure, and negative social impacts on local communities.
The CMMI action plan outlines three key strategies to address these concerns:

Sustainable Port Infrastructure:
The plan advocates for investments in sustainable port infrastructure, including waste management systems, shore power connections to reduce emissions from cruise ships, and improved passenger transport options to minimize traffic congestion.2.
Capacity Management and Destination Management:
The plan emphasizes the importance of implementing effective capacity management strategies to prevent overcrowding in popular tourist destinations. This includes promoting alternative destinations and activities, encouraging staggered arrival times for cruise ships, and implementing visitor quotas.3.
Community Engagement and Education:
The CMMI highlights the crucial role of community engagement and education in fostering a sustainable tourism industry.
