Dakota Joshua’s breakout under Rick Tocchet fueling Vancouver Canucks’ playoff run

Dakota Joshua has emerged as a key cog in the Vancouver Canucks’ playoff run, following a breakout season under coach Rick Tocchet. Tocchet, who took over the team last January, recognized Joshua’s potential and challenged him to develop his skills. Joshua has responded with career-high numbers during a campaign that saw Vancouver rise to the top of the league standings before clinching its first division title since 2013.

Joshua’s impact was evident in the Canucks’ Game 1 victory over the Nashville Predators in their first-round playoff series, where he registered three points and six hits. His teammates have praised his versatility, physicality, and offensive abilities.

Hailing from Dearborn, Michigan, Joshua was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He never played for the Maple Leafs, who traded him to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations in 2019. Joshua bounced between the Blues and their American Hockey League affiliates before signing with Vancouver as a free agent in 2022.

Tocchet is impressed with Joshua’s well-rounded game and has praised his improvement in conditioning. Coming into training camp last year, the coach was concerned about Joshua’s conditioning but was pleased with his response to criticism. Joshua made the opening-night roster and has become a valuable contributor averaging over 14 minutes of ice time per game.

Joshua’s development has added depth to the Canucks’ lineup, and he is expected to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. His performance in the playoffs has further showcased his value, and it remains to be seen whether Vancouver can retain him long-term.
