The Dalai Lama, on his 89th birthday, addressed concerns about his health, assuring his followers that he is recovering well from recent knee surgery. In a video message from the United States, where he is recuperating, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism brushed aside rumors of ill health. He stated, “Recently I had surgery on my knee, which has given me some problem. However, I am recovering and have no problem at all now.”
The Dalai Lama, a charismatic figure who popularised Buddhism internationally, won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his tireless efforts to keep the Tibetan cause alive in exile. He fled to India in 1959 after China sent troops into Tibet, claiming to liberate Tibetan “serfs”. With the Dalai Lama’s advancing age and health challenges, the appointment of his successor has become a pressing issue for Tibetans who are striving for greater autonomy within China or full independence. Tibetan Buddhists believe in reincarnation, and the Dalai Lama has indicated that he will address questions about his succession, including whether and where he will be reborn, around his 90th birthday.
Addressing concerns directly, the Dalai Lama said, “I am nearly 90 now but I don’t feel unhealthy, except for the slight discomfort in my legs. I would like to thank all my fellow Tibetans in and outside Tibet for your prayers on my birthday.” He acknowledged that some health issues are simply part of the aging process. On Saturday, tens of thousands of Buddhists and well-wishers worldwide celebrated his birthday and offered prayers for his continued good health. The Dalai Lama remains a symbol of hope for the Tibetan people, representing their desire for a return to their homeland.
The Dalai Lama also addressed misinformation circulating about his health. He urged his followers not to believe rumors that he is in a hospital undergoing intensive treatment. “There may be people trying to confuse you about my health, saying that the Dalai Lama has gone to a hospital and is undergoing treatments, and so on, making my condition sound grave. You don’t need to trust such misinformation,” he said.
