Daniel Cormier advocates for the introduction of a new UFC title in the 165-pound weight class, with the upcoming fight between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler as its inaugural bout.
Cormier believes that creating a new weight class and attaching a big name like McGregor to it would draw attention and generate excitement. He suggests moving the welterweight division to 175 pounds, middleweight to 195 pounds, and keeping light heavyweight at 205 pounds.
The proposal for a 165-pound weight class has been pushed by many UFC athletes for years, arguing that the gap between lightweight and welterweight leaves fighters in the middle without an ideal division. However, UFC CEO Dana White has consistently opposed the idea.
Cormier’s co-host, Chael Sonnen, also opposes the creation of a 165-pound title, citing a lack of commission sanctioning and the combined losing records of McGregor and Chandler in recent fights.
Despite the objections, Cormier believes that a new weight class and title would provide more opportunities for fighters and enhance the sport’s competitive landscape.
