Daniel Craig, best known for his role as James Bond, has taken on a new character in Luca Guadagnino’s latest film, ‘Queer’. This film, based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel of the same name, premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Set in 1950s Mexico City, ‘Queer’ follows the story of Lee, an American expatriate who lives a secluded existence, only connecting with a small community of Americans. His life takes a turn when he encounters Eugene, a young student who has just arrived in the city, leading to the possibility of a genuine connection for Lee.
During a press conference, Craig addressed the intimate scenes he filmed with co-star Drew Starkey. He explained, “As you all know, filming sex scenes is far from intimate. You have all these eyes on you. We wanted to make it as moving, real, and natural as possible. Drew was wonderful to work with, a lovely, beautiful actor. I think we laughed a lot. We tried to have fun.”
Guadagnino, who first met Craig 20 years ago and has finally collaborated with him on this project, described the actor as “unafraid to approach” and a rare talent who is “not afraid to show his vulnerability.” In an interview with Variety, Guadagnino expressed, “He’s frankly one of the greatest actors of his generation. He’s so incredibly meticulous and deep and also beautiful and universal. When he told me he was up for it, to do whatever the film required, I was pinching myself.”
‘Queer’, a film about connection, vulnerability, and finding solace in unexpected places, promises to be an intriguing exploration of human relationships. It will be interesting to see how Craig’s performance in this new and challenging role is received by audiences.
