In a surprising turn of events, American tennis star Danielle Collins has announced she will be extending her career into 2025, reversing her earlier decision to retire at the end of the current season. The 30-year-old, known for her aggressive playing style and nicknamed ‘Danimal,’ made the announcement on social media, citing health challenges and a more complex path to starting a family than initially anticipated.
Collins, who reached the Australian Open final in 2022, had previously stated her intention to step away from the sport to focus on family life after losing in the second round of the Australian Open in January. However, she revealed in her Instagram post that she has been dealing with health issues, including a diagnosis of endometriosis.
“While I was very excited and eager to wrap up my tennis career on a high note this year and jump headfirst into my next chapter of life, things have not gone as planned,” Collins wrote. “So, the Danimal story has not reached its conclusion. I will be back on tour in 2025.”
She acknowledged the challenges associated with endometriosis and fertility, stating, “Dealing with endometriosis and fertility is a massive challenge for many women and something that I am actively traversing, but I am fully confident in the team I am working with.”
Collins’ decision to continue playing was further solidified by her inclusion in the United States team for the season-opening mixed team United Cup tournament in Sydney and Perth. This signifies her commitment to returning to the court for the year’s first Grand Slam in Melbourne in mid-January.
Despite facing setbacks, Collins remains optimistic about the future. “While there are no guarantees in life, I hope to build on my 2024 momentum and keep playing until there is more certainty around my personal fertility journey,” she said. “The only guarantee for now will be some more epic matches.”
Collins’ decision reflects the complex personal journeys many athletes face, highlighting the importance of prioritizing health and personal goals alongside athletic aspirations. Her continued presence on the tour promises exciting matches and underscores her determination to achieve both her personal and professional ambitions.
