After a year without a club, former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly being targeted by Spanish team Real Betis ahead of the summer transfer window.
De Gea, 33, left United last June when his contract expired after 12 years at Old Trafford, during which he won every domestic honor available. Betis was one of several clubs that were initially linked to the goalkeeper, but his salary demands proved to be too high for all potential suitors, and he ended up spending the entire campaign as a free agent.
However, according to Estadio Deportivo, the La Liga giants are planning to make another bid for the former Spain international in June. Manuel Pellegrini’s team intends to get in touch with De Gea’s representatives to discuss his situation. The former Atletico Madrid player is anticipated to have to lower his demands given his advanced age and the fact that he has been out of the game for a full year.
The former Premier League player would also be interested in establishing roots in Spain with his family. Betis requires a new goalkeeper because Claudio Bravo is 41 years old and will soon be leaving. After a string of outstanding performances at the Benito Villamarin Stadium, Rui Silva has also drawn interest from other clubs. Silva’s contract runs until 2026, but Serie A clubs are circling, and Betis is open to negotiations.
However, De Gea is not the only potential candidate that the Spanish club is considering. One of them is Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena, who could become available due to his club’s financial difficulties.
During his time at United, De Gea made 545 appearances, recording 190 clean sheets and giving up 590 goals. The Spaniard won the Premier League Golden Glove last season after finishing with the most clean sheets in the English top flight.
