After 15 years of leading his namesake label, David Koma finds himself at a crossroads. While proud of his accomplishments, he yearns for a different kind of success, one rooted in creative freedom and personal fulfillment. This desire has led him on a journey back to his roots, seeking the inspiration he experienced as a young Central Saint Martins graduate. His latest resort collection embodies this shift in focus.
The collection was born from an encounter with a captivating sculpture by Isabelle Albuquerque. The 3D-printed piece, rendered in deer skin, ignited Koma’s imagination, prompting him to explore themes of metamorphosis and the ancient Greek world. This inspiration translated into a captivating array of pieces. Fawn-spotted swimsuits, bodycon dresses, and capes evoke a sensual connection to nature’s primal beauty. Leather saddles are reimagined as belt skirts, adding a touch of equestrian elegance. Crystallized embellishments, reminiscent of talons, adorn fluid jersey gowns, adding a touch of fierce femininity.
Koma’s signature use of luxurious fabrics takes center stage. Glossy raffia, a luxurious alternative to fur, is transformed into aqueous pelts on a nude-sequined skirt, conjuring the image of an Akhal-Teke horse’s lustrous mane. This same raffia finds its way onto statement coats and beach bags, creating an abundance of volume that speaks to the collection’s dramatic flair. The weight of these pieces is a testament to their exquisite craftsmanship and the enduring power of Koma’s vision.
