David Quinn’s tenure as head coach of the San Jose Sharks has come to an end, as the team has announced his departure. Quinn, who was hired by General Manager Mike Grier in July 2022, oversaw two seasons with the Sharks, compiling a record of 41-98-25. This followed a 96-87-25 record during his time with the New York Rangers from 2018 to 2021. However, Quinn acknowledged the ongoing season as the most challenging in his coaching career, spanning over 25 years in the NHL, AHL, NCAA, and USNTDP. The Sharks finished with a dismal 19-54-9 record, resulting in a Points % of .280, the second-worst in the salary cap era, just ahead of the 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings. Quinn’s task was made more difficult by a team that faced questionable construction and was plagued by injuries, including the extended absence of captain Logan Couture. According to NHL Injury Viz, the Sharks finished with the second-highest number of man games lost in the league, at 459. The decision to part ways with Quinn follows a season marked by struggles and adversity. The future of the coaching staff, including assistant coaches Ryan Warsofsky, Brian Wiseman, and Scott Gordon, as well as goaltending coach Thomas Speer, remains uncertain. Grier also announced the departure of Head Athletic Trainer Ray Tufts. Grier had previously expressed the need for evaluation and information gathering before making any decisions regarding the coaching staff. He stated that discussions would take place once all necessary information was obtained, involving input from players, staff, and owner Hasso Plattner.
