Marvel’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ trailer is packed with surprises and Easter eggs, but one of the strangest has nothing to do with the superhero action on screen. The song accompanying the trailer, Madonna’s iconic ‘Like a Prayer,’ holds historical significance that perfectly aligns with the trailer’s release date.
35 years ago, ‘Like a Prayer’ topped the Billboard Top 100 charts for three weeks and the album reigned supreme for six weeks. Coincidentally, the official trailer release date for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ marks the anniversary of this chart-topping success.
This uncanny coincidence caught the attention of fans and even star Ryan Reynolds, who took to Twitter to express his astonishment: ‘I swear to Marvel Jesus, we did not plan this!’
While some might suspect a calculated marketing stunt, Reynolds insists that the musical coincidence was completely unplanned. However, fans are predicting that ‘Like a Prayer’ may experience a resurgence in popularity, similar to what happened with Celine Dion’s ‘Ashes’ after its appearance in ‘Deadpool 2.’ Only time will tell if this prediction comes to pass.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ hits theaters on July 26, 2024. While you wait for its release, be sure to check out our reactions to the nine-minute Cinemacon footage and our roundup of fan theories inspired by the trailer.
