Decorated IPS Officer Appointed as J&K Police Special DGP Amidst Rising Terrorism

Nalin Prabhat, a decorated Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has been appointed as the Special Director General of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, effective from October 1st. The announcement came after the Home Ministry shortened his tenure as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) to facilitate his deputation to the AGMUT cadre.

Prabhat, a 1992-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will take charge following the retirement of RR Swain on September 30th. The appointment, initially for a period of three years, comes at a time when the Kashmir Valley has been grappling with a significant increase in terrorist activities.

The new Special DGP is expected to bring a strategic approach to law enforcement in the region. Prabhat’s extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, particularly his leadership of the Greyhounds – a specialized anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh – makes him well-suited for this challenging role.

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a sharp rise in terrorist incidents in recent months. Encounters with security forces have become frequent, including an assault on an army convoy in Kathua and skirmishes in Doda and Udhampur. These clashes have tragically resulted in the deaths of around 20 soldiers and over a dozen civilians this year.

The appointment of Prabhat reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening security in the region and combating the growing threat of terrorism. His extensive experience and proven track record are expected to play a pivotal role in restoring peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
