Maharashtra’s cyber police have promptly responded to the alarming issue of deepfakes by filing an FIR against an anonymous user. The user, identified as @sujataindia1st, manipulated a video of renowned actor Ranveer Singh, misrepresenting his words to promote a political party. This malicious act compelled Ranveer’s father, Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, to file a complaint, triggering the FIR’s registration.
The distorted video cunningly altered Ranveer’s original statement, which lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to preserving India’s rich culture and traditions. The fabricated version portrayed Ranveer criticizing the Prime Minister and endorsing a political party, an affiliation he has vehemently denied.
The FIR encompasses charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, demonstrating the gravity with which authorities view this offense. The incident exemplifies the escalating menace of deepfake technology, which can be weaponized to propagate misinformation and tarnish reputations. As the investigation progresses, further updates are anticipated.
