Defendant’s Speedy Trial Claim Denied in Flint Double Homicide Case

In the ongoing double homicide case that took place in Flint, Michigan in 2019, a Genesee County Circuit Court judge has denied the defendant’s claim that his right to a speedy trial had been violated. The defendant, 40-year-old Reggie Lay, has been in jail awaiting trial for nearly five years and was facing a total of 14 charges, including two counts of first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the deaths of Nolan Michael Thomas and Nicholas Scott Collins on Dort Highway. Lay argued that this extended period of pretrial detention infringed upon his constitutional rights to a speedy trial. However, the judge rejected his motion to dismiss the case, allowing the prosecution to proceed with their case against Lay.
