Delaware Embraces Clean Energy with Groundbreaking Community Solar Projects
Delaware is making significant strides in its transition to a cleaner energy future. Two new community solar projects, located in Kent County, are breaking ground and poised to bring a wave of affordable, clean energy to residents. These projects mark a pivotal moment for Delaware’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.
Powering Homes and Saving Money
Developed by Maryland-based Chaberton Energy and owned and operated by Pivot Energy, a national Colorado-based renewable energy provider, the two solar projects will generate nearly 10 megawatts direct current (MWdc) of electricity once complete. This clean energy will power the equivalent of over 900 Delaware homes, offering residents a significant cost savings – an average of 10% off their electricity bills.
A Collaboration for a Greener Future
Senator Stephanie Hansen, a strong advocate for clean energy initiatives in Delaware, hailed the projects as a testament to the state’s commitment to a cleaner future. “We are proud of Delaware’s emerging role in the clean energy transition,” she stated, emphasizing the projects’ ability to “help our farmers, take pressure off the power grid, and help Delawareans at all economic levels save money on their power bills.”
Community Involvement and Environmental Stewardship
The two projects, named Crestone Solar Farm and Blackburn Solar Farm, represent a remarkable collaboration between the developers and the local community. The 5.7 MWdc Crestone Solar Farm in Harrington, Delaware, will utilize land owned by three sisters who wished to preserve it for future generations. “Our wish has always been to keep the property for future generations,” said Michelle Thompson, one of the landowners. “We are grateful for the opportunity to preserve the land in a meaningful way for our children, and beyond that, we are excited to partner with Chaberton and Pivot to offer a cost-saving energy option to our community.”
The 4.2 MWdc Blackburn Solar Farm in Magnolia, Delaware, will cover approximately 20 acres, providing enough electricity to power over 400 homes. This project underscores the commitment of Chaberton Energy and Pivot Energy to not only provide clean energy but also to actively involve local communities in the process.
A Model for Other States
Erica Brinker, Chief Commercial and Sustainability Officer at Chaberton Energy, highlighted the collaborative efforts that brought these projects to fruition. “A tremendous amount of work went into getting Projects Crestone and Blackburn to construction,” she said, specifically acknowledging the work of Senator Hansen in sponsoring legislation enabling community solar initiatives. “Under her leadership, Delaware is showing other states actionable ways to reach clean energy goals and improve life for constituents.”

The groundbreaking ceremony held on October 24th at the Crestone site was a celebration of this important milestone. Senator Hansen, Chaberton CEO Stefano Ratti, and Energize Delaware Executive Director Drew Slater delivered remarks before joining Chaberton and Pivot representatives for the ceremonial first shovel. The event also included a generous donation from Chaberton Cares to the Lake Forest High School Future Farmers of America and the Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club, showcasing Chaberton’s commitment to supporting local organizations and fostering a sustainable future.
