Travelers can breathe a sigh of relief as Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 (T1) is set to reopen its doors on August 17, primarily for SpiceJet flights. The announcement was made by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which is managed by the GMR Group. The reopening marks a significant milestone in the terminal’s Phase 3A expansion project.
The terminal had been temporarily closed since June 28 following a roof collapse triggered by heavy rainfall. The incident tragically resulted in one fatality and six injuries. During the closure, operations were shifted to Terminals 2 and 3. IndiGo, handling approximately 80% of the flights initially scheduled at T1, and SpiceJet, responsible for the remaining services, took over operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly expanded section of T1, located on the extreme right, on March 10. However, the affected sections on the left and center will remain under repair for an extended period.
DIAL has been working closely with airlines to facilitate a smooth transition of flights back to T1. On August 17, SpiceJet will transfer 13 flights to T1, followed by IndiGo, which will move 34 flights starting September 2.
Despite these moves, the terminal will still function at a reduced capacity, operating at approximately 25% of its pre-incident capacity. To ensure passenger convenience, those traveling with SpiceJet will access T1 through entry gate A on the ground level, while IndiGo passengers will utilize gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. All arrivals will be directed to specific areas on the ground floor.
