Delhi Braces for More Rain as Heavy Downpour Causes Waterlogging

Delhi residents woke up to a deluge on Wednesday morning, September 6, as heavy rainfall lashed the national capital. The downpour, occurring amidst a yellow alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), caused significant waterlogging in various parts of Delhi-NCR, disrupting daily life and leading to traffic jams.

The IMD, in its latest bulletin dated September 5, had predicted isolated to scattered rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until September 12. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Delhi forecasted thundershowers and light to moderate rain on September 6, with generally cloudy skies throughout the day. A yellow alert remained in place for September 7, indicating the potential for more rainfall.

The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to hover around 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will settle around 24 degrees Celsius. The city is predicted to experience intermittent wet spells until September 9, with a “partly cloudy sky” anticipated on September 10 and 11. Thunderstorms and rain are likely on September 12. Over the next six days, the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to fluctuate between 36 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Visuals from across Delhi, including Pandit Pant Marg, Baprola, Aerocity, Munrika, Shanti Path, and Hauz Khas, showcased the heavy downpour on Friday morning. Commuters heading to school and work faced difficulties navigating the flooded roads in Baprola, while traffic congestion caused by the rains hampered vehicle movement on several roads. Reports indicated that RK Puram, Najafgarh Road, and Moti Bagh, among other areas, experienced the brunt of the rainfall.

Following the downpour, the Delhi Traffic Police issued a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Traffic is affected on Press Enclave Road in the carriageway from Saket Court towards Malviya Nagar due to water logging near Malviya Nagar Metro Station.” The advisory urged commuters to plan their journeys with the waterlogging disruptions in mind.

In another post, the Delhi Traffic Police informed that traffic movement on Aurobindo Marg was also affected due to waterlogging and potholes near the red light at PTS Malviya Nagar. The police advised motorists to exercise caution and plan their routes accordingly.
