Delhi CM Atishi Blocked from Meeting Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk, Accuses LG of Interference

A heated political conflict has emerged in Delhi, with Chief Minister Atishi alleging that she was barred from meeting climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and a group of Ladakh activists demanding greater autonomy for the region. Atishi claims she was stopped by Delhi Police outside the Bawana Police Station on Tuesday while en route to meet Wangchuk and his supporters.

Taking to social media platform X, Atishi stated that the police cited orders from the Lieutenant Governor (LG) as the reason for her denial. She condemned this action as “dictatorship” and called for an end to LG rule in both Delhi and Ladakh.

Atishi’s statement highlights a growing tension between the elected government in Delhi and the LG, who is appointed by the central government. The conflict over LG rule has been a recurring issue in Delhi, with the AAP government accusing the BJP-led central government of using the LG to undermine its authority.

Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent environmentalist and social activist, has been leading a march, “Delhi Chalo Padyatra,” for a month, starting from Leh. He and his supporters have been demanding inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, a move that would grant law-making powers to the local population. This, they believe, would help safeguard their land and cultural identity.

However, Wangchuk and his supporters were detained by Delhi Police at the Singhu border on Monday night. Atishi’s attempt to meet them was further blocked, adding fuel to the ongoing dispute. The Delhi Chief Minister has accused the BJP of being afraid of democracy and of using undemocratic means to silence dissent.

The incident underscores the ongoing political conflict over LG rule, its impact on regional autonomy, and the role of central government interference in local affairs. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Delhi government will navigate this complex issue and whether the demand for greater autonomy for Ladakh will be addressed.
