Delhi Court Grants Arvind Kejriwal Time to File Rejoinder in Excise Case

The case stems from two complaints filed by the ED against Kejriwal for allegedly evading summonses issued to him in connection with the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. The ED had approached the magisterial court seeking prosecution of Kejriwal for skipping multiple summonses issued to him in the case. Kejriwal had challenged the summons issued by the magisterial court after taking cognisance of the ED’s complaints.

Kejriwal’s lawyers informed the court that they could not get instructions from him as he is currently in judicial custody. The court has now listed the matter for further hearing on May 14.

In a related development, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition filed by Kejriwal seeking quashing of the summons issued by the magisterial court. The High Court held that the magisterial court had the jurisdiction to issue summons to Kejriwal and that there was no infirmity in the process followed by the court.
