Delhi Education Minister Begins Hunger Strike Amid Water Crisis

Delhi Education Minister Atishi has begun an indefinite hunger strike in protest of the ongoing water shortage in the national capital. Atishi, accompanied by party leader Sanjay Singh, initiated the hunger strike on Friday, June 21st, alleging that she had exhausted all options to ensure water availability for Delhi residents.

She cited the need to pressurize the Haryana government into supplying 100 million gallons of water daily to address the crisis. “As water minister, I made all efforts to get water for Delhi; I am left with no choice but to start indefinite hunger strike,” PTI quoted Atishi as saying.

The water crisis has compounded the difficulties faced by Delhi residents amidst the scorching heatwaves. “This hunger strike will continue till Haryana govt gives Delhi its due share of water,” Atishi stated.

Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, joined Atishi in her hunger strike, expressing her support. “To appeal to the Haryana government, Delhi Minister Atishi is going to do ‘satyagraha’ for an indefinite period. She will not eat anything and only take water. She is doing this for the thirsty people of Delhi,” reported PTI.

Sunita Kejriwal further conveyed CM Kejriwal’s concerns, stating, “CM Arvind Kejriwal says that he is pained to see on TV the suffering of the people of Delhi. He hopes that Atishi’s penance will be successful and the public will get some relief.”
