In a startling revelation, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has claimed ignorance regarding the requirement for permission to fell trees in the capital’s Ridge area. This statement came in a personal affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, as reported by NDTV on Wednesday. The revelation has sparked controversy, as Saxena, who also chairs the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), now faces scrutiny for his role in the illegal felling of over 1,100 trees.
The Supreme Court had previously issued a deadline of October 22nd for Saxena to take action against DDA officials responsible for the deforestation. Furthermore, the court demanded a response from the LG explaining why the trees were cut without obtaining the necessary clearance from the court. Earlier in the proceedings, the court had sought an explanation from Saxena regarding actions taken to hold those accountable for the alleged illegal felling of an estimated 600 to 650 trees.
The Supreme Court is currently presiding over a contempt case concerning the tree cutting incident. The bench has indicated that criminal action may be taken against the officers responsible for the unauthorized felling, if the chairperson, Saxena, agrees.
The Supreme Court’s involvement highlights the gravity of the situation and underscores the need for stringent action to protect Delhi’s environment and prevent future illegal deforestation in the Ridge area. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding environmental regulations and holding those responsible for their violation accountable. The outcome of this case will be closely watched by environmental activists and citizens alike, who are hoping for justice to be served and for the preservation of Delhi’s green spaces.
