The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has set its sights on opening all three priority corridors of its Phase 4 expansion by 2026. This ambitious plan will add a significant 65 kilometers of new lines to the city’s already extensive metro network.
While construction began in December 2019, the DMRC has faced challenges in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and delays in obtaining tree-cutting permissions. Despite these setbacks, the state-owned railway operator has been working diligently over the past one and a half to two years, achieving a remarkable 50% completion rate.
As part of the Phase 4 expansion, DMRC expects to open the Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension by August 2024. The Majlis Park to Maujpur corridor is slated to open the following year. The remaining sections, including the Aerocity to Tughlakabad (Golden Line) and the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg (Magenta Line) corridors, are planned for phased openings by 2026.
While the DMRC is confident in its timeline, certain approvals for tree cutting and land acquisition at specific locations are still pending.
In addition to the Phase 4 expansion, DMRC has also mentioned plans for the Inderlok to Indraprastha expansion and the Saket G Block to Lajpat Nagar expansion, signifying the ongoing commitment to expanding Delhi’s metro network. The DMRC’s commitment to completing this ambitious project by 2026 signifies a major step towards enhancing connectivity and improving the overall transportation infrastructure in Delhi.
