Delhi-NCR Bathed in Heavy Rainfall Ahead of Monsoon Arrival

Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) during the wee hours of Friday, even before the official arrival of monsoon. The downpour caused significant waterlogging and traffic jams across the region.

The Delhi Airport Terminal-1’s roof collapsed early Friday morning, highlighting the intensity of the rainfall. The Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC) Delhi issued an alert, predicting light to moderate intensity rain with heavy intensity rain over isolated places in the next two hours across Delhi, NCR, Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, and Farukhnagar.

The heavy rainfall has led to speculation about the arrival of monsoon in the national capital. While the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted the monsoon’s arrival in Delhi within two to three days, there has been no official announcement confirming its arrival.

Despite the downpour, the IMD continues to predict the monsoon’s official entry into Delhi in the coming days. The ongoing rainfall provides a glimpse of the heavy showers expected throughout the monsoon season, which is anticipated to bring relief from the scorching summer heat.
