Delhi experienced heavy rainfall on Wednesday, resulting in the diversion of at least 10 flights. The adverse weather conditions caused these diversions between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM, according to Delhi Airport officials who spoke to the news agency ANI. Airlines such as Air India, Vistara, IndiGo, and SpiceJet issued advisories warning passengers about flight disruptions due to the heavy rainfall. Passengers were advised to check their flight status and plan to arrive at the airport earlier than usual to avoid potential delays.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported around 7 pm that clouds had converged over the city from all four sectors, and the rain was expected to last for two hours. SpiceJet and IndiGo both alerted passengers to keep a close eye on flights flying in and out of Delhi on Wednesday, July 31st. IndiGo, in a humorous tone, said, “We have a special announcement straight from the heavenly skies! The rain gods have decided to shower #Delhi with their blessings tonight. As a result, we’re expecting heavy rainfall throughout the night ⛈ Check your flight status.”
Air India advised passengers to start early for the airport, noting, “Flights to and from Delhi may get affected due to bad weather this evening. Guests are advised to start early for the airport, as slow traffic and waterlogging may delay movement.” SpiceJet, meanwhile, issued an advisory stating, “Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Delhi (DEL), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status.”
The heavy rain brought back haunting memories of the tragic flooding at a coaching centre in Rajinder Nagar on Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of three students. Several parts of the city reported waterlogging, with visuals from the area showing people wading through knee-deep water. The road where the coaching centre is located was once again flooded, raising concerns about the city’s preparedness for heavy rainfall events. Old Rajinder Nagar, where the tragic incident occurred, was once again inundated following the heavy rain on Wednesday, prompting a flood-like situation in the area known for its numerous coaching centres. Numerous videos surfaced online, capturing the devastating impact of the flooding.
