Delhi Schools Seek Space Solutions to Address Classroom Shortage

Delhi Schools Explore Solutions for Classroom Shortage

To address the space crunch in Northeast Delhi schools, the Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) is considering various options. One suggestion is to add floors with light-gauge steel-framed structures in schools with limited space. The DoE has also directed the vacation of rooms currently used for non-essential purposes, such as sports, NCC, NSS, and admissions, to make way for classrooms.

The DoE is proactively seeking vacant land and exploring the use of surplus infrastructure in neighboring MCD schools. In response to a PIL filed in the High Court (HC) highlighting the issue of irregular classes due to the space crunch, the DoE has issued show-cause notices to 18 officials for negligence.

Specific measures are being taken at individual schools to alleviate the space constraints. At a double-shift school in Johripur, with a student population of over 700 in each shift, the DoE has ruled out further vertical expansion due to structural limitations. At a school in Sonia Vihar, the DoE is relocating over 200 students from each shift to a newly opened school in Khajuri Khas.

In the case of a school in Dayalpur, the DoE has approached the MCD to inquire about the possible use of a ground area and classrooms in a nearby MCD primary school. At the Sabhapur school, where student-classroom ratios are particularly high, the DoE is seeking the use of a hall in an adjacent MCD primary school for classrooms.
