IMD Issues Red Alert as Delhi Experiences Record-Breaking Heat
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sunday in Delhi, warning of extreme heatwave conditions. The national capital is anticipated to witness temperatures soaring to 44 degrees Celsius, accompanied by a mostly clear sky and strong surface winds.
North India Braces for Severe Heatwave
According to the IMD, North India, including parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, will face a severe heatwave until May 21. The weather agency has issued a red alert for western Rajasthan, indicating extremely severe heatwave conditions. Orange alerts have been issued for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, eastern Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat for the next three days.
Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha, signaling heatwave-like conditions. The IMD has predicted that heatwave conditions are likely to persist in Uttar Pradesh, isolated areas of Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, northern Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha until May 21.
Severe Heat Observed in Parts of India
On Saturday, several parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat experienced severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. Barmer in Rajasthan recorded a scorching high of 46.9 degrees Celsius, while Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Surendranagar and Deesa in Gujarat also registered temperatures ranging from 45 to 45.5 degrees Celsius.
