Delhi’s Heatwave Intensifies: Temperatures Reach 46 Degrees Celsius

New Delhi is facing an unrelenting heatwave, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels. On Saturday, several areas of the city recorded maximum temperatures close to 46 degrees Celsius, a significant increase from the average temperatures for this time of the year. The Aya Nagar observatory registered the highest temperature of 46 degrees Celsius, while the Ridge area recorded 45.5 degrees Celsius. Lodhi Road, Safdarjung, and Palam also reported scorching temperatures of 44.7, 44.6, and 44 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a warning, indicating that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist until June 16. Strong surface winds are expected to prevail over the plains of north-west India during the next five days, but there is no significant change in maximum temperatures anticipated. The RMC further reported that severe heatwave conditions have been observed in most parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and isolated areas of Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan over the past 24 hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heatwave conditions are predicted to continue in several northern parts of India for the next 3-4 days before gradually subsiding. The IMD has forecasted severe heatwave conditions in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi for June 15 and 17. Additionally, some areas of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are likely to experience warm nights between June 15 and 17.

On Friday, Prayagraj (East Uttar Pradesh) recorded the highest maximum temperature of 46.9°C in the country.

Residents of Delhi and the surrounding regions are advised to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, such as staying hydrated, wearing loose and light-colored clothing, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.
