Demarcation of Floodplain Zones of Ganga and Ram Ganga in Moradabad District Expedited
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the authorities to expedite the demarcation of floodplain zones of the Ganga and Ram Ganga rivers in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district.
The NGT’s order came in response to a plea alleging illegal construction by a state-owned energy company in the floodplains of the rivers. The district magistrate’s report states that Rs 1.12 crore has been allocated to the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) for the demarcation process, which is expected to be completed within 12 months.
The NGT bench, headed by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, noted that the demarcation process would help determine whether the construction work was within the floodplains. The bench directed the authorities to submit a quarterly report on the progress of the demarcation process and to take action against the project proponent if necessary.
The NGT’s order is significant as it underscores the importance of environmental protection and the need to prevent illegal construction in floodplains, which can lead to flooding and other environmental hazards.
